The Hill reports the latest total for Obamacrap waivers now exceeds 1,000 groups and it appears we are not done yet.
In order to avoid disruption in the insurance market, the healthcare overhaul gives HHS the power to grant waivers to firms that cannot meet new annual coverage limits in 2011. The waivers have typically been granted to so-called "mini-med" plans that offer limited annual coverage — as low as $2,000 — that would fall short of meeting the new annual coverage floor of $750,000 in 2011.
"We don't want to take away people's health insurance before they have some realistic other choices,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in an interview with The Hill earlier this year.
So what happens next year when these temporary stays of execution expire? Will employers drop the plans if not granted a new waiver? Or will they offer the new plans and pass on the higher premiums to their employees?
We could not help but notice a number of unions that asked for, and were granted waivers. Unions have, as a general rule, long been supporters of Democratic candidates and played a noticeable roll in the 2008 election of Obama.
In 2008 unions contributed in excess of $400,000,000 to Democratic candidates. The SEIU alone contributed $27,000,000 to Obama's campaign.
So one has to wonder, are unions getting special waivers because of their contributions?
And have unions become disallusioned in the candidate that campaigned on the promise of reforming health care? Perhaps reform was OK as long as it did not affect them.
